The Power of Gradual Change

Writer: Iman BakhacheIman Bakhache

Creating new habits is much like introducing sports into our lives, whether it’s running, weightlifting, or any other form of exercise. If we attempt to do too much at once, we risk burnout, frustration, we feel demotivated. Instead, a gradual approach sets us up for long-term success.

Ask Yourself:

1.   What are the habits I want to introduce?

o   Identify the specific habits you want to develop. Whether it’s daily meditation, journaling, exercising, or healthier eating…Just be clear about your goal.

2.   Where will I begin?

o   Start small. If you want to focus on positive thinking, start with thinking one positive thing per day, then two, three… Train the habit of positive thoughts.

3.   How will I gradually start?

o   Break your goal into manageable steps. A run doesn’t start with a marathon, new habits should be approached incrementally.

4.   How much will I introduce every day?

o   It’s about consistency, not intensity. Small, sustainable changes over time create lifelong habits.

Celebrate Small Wins

One of the biggest mistakes people make when forming new habits is focusing too much on what still needs to be done rather than recognizing their progress. This leads to frustration, demotivation, and negativity.

CELEBRATE!

  • Acknowledge every small step you take.

  • Celebrate tiny achievemnets, such as completing a five-minute meditation or choosing a healthy meal.

  • Focus on effort, not just results. The fact that you are trying is already a win!

By focusing on your efforts and recognizing progress, you build a positive relationship with habit formation. When we shift our attention from what’s lacking to what’s being achieved, we stay motivated and inspired to continue. Remember, it’s not about perfection… It’s about progress.

So, as you embark on your journey of change, be kind to yourself.

Take it step by step, celebrate your wins, and trust that every small effort is moving you toward a better version of yourself!
